A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
